EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO CREATE A CARING SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

Through YMCA Project Cornerstone's Expect Respect leadership program, 4th-8th grade students are empowered to create a more inclusive and positive school community where all students feel they belong.

Through activities, conversation, and learning, students will investigate bullying behavior, the importance of empathy, and the power of words. The group discusses what they see and hear at school, and what they theyselves can do to make their campus a place where all students feel safe and valued. The Project Cornerstone facilitator shares different aspects bullying, encourages the students to be UPstanders, and reinforces the importance of the students' role as leaders in their school community.

HOW IT WORKS

A group of students representing the diversity of the school community is chosen by staff as influential leaders to be a part of the Expect Respect group. During the workshop, the group begins developing an action plan to increase kindness, prevent bullying, and improve the overall school climate. After the workshop, the school's Expect Respect Advisor holds frequent meetings throughout the school year to support the group in further developing and implementing their plan. Students who are part of the Expect Respect group experience a positive leadership opportunity and build self-efficacy, and the entire school benefits from an improved culture that makes it easier for everyone to learn and thrive.

Project Cornerstone staff is available for follow-up and consultation to support the Expect Respect advisor and the team of students in their progress to fully implement their Action Plan.

SHARED LANGUAGE AND CONCEPTS WITH OUR ABC PROGRAM

Expect Respect is also aligned with and reinforces the curriculum of our Asset Building Champion (ABC) program, ensuring that students learn and apply the same vocabulary and concepts. Through a shared common language among students, families, and school staff, the tools and behaviors learned are more likely to be effective, helping youth gain the skills that will motivate and inspire them both in school and in life.

Note that participation in the ABC program is not a requirement to hold a successful Expect Respect workshop at your school.
